32vs64

Start64!While nearly all modern Intel/AMD x86 hardware is 64-bit capable, among novice Linux users the question commonly is whether to install the 32-bit or 64-bit version of a given distribution. We have previously delivered benchmarks showing Ubuntu 32-bit vs. 64-bit performance while in this article is an updated look in seeing how the 32-bit versus 64-bit binary performance compares when running Ubuntu 13.04 with the Linux 3.8 kernel.

Start64!Where is the 64-bit version of the Firefox web browser for the Windows operating system? That’s a question that I have been asking myself for the past couple of years, probably ever since I updated to a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional. Mozilla is offering 64-bit versions of the browser for Mac and Linux, but Windows, the operating system that is used by the majority of Internet users? There have been nightly and custom builds of 64-bit versions of Firefox, but that is about it.

Start64!Mozilla Engineering Manager Benjamin Smedberg last Friday quietly posted a thread over on the Google Groups mozilla.dev.planning discussion board titled “Turning off win64 builds.” By Wednesday, Smedberg had declared that the 64-bit version of Firefox for Windows would never see the light of day.

Start64!A few years ago, I wrote a Blog post about false positive problems that I have in many of my tools, and I received many responses from users and developers that experience the same problem. Today the false positive issues still exist, but it seems that people are more aware to the false positive problems, because I get less complaints about virus alerts in my software than what I have gotten in the past.

Start64!In past years on Phoronix there has been no shortage of 32-bit vs. 64-bit Linux benchmarks. Assuming you don't have a limited amount of RAM and under memory pressure, 64-bit distributions tend to be much faster than the 32-bit versions. However, some Linux users still often wonder whether they should use the 32-bit or 64-bit version of their distribution even when on 64-bit hardware. So with that said, here's some more 32-bit vs. 64-bit benchmarks of Ubuntu 12.10 with the Linux 3.5 kernel.

Start64!Microsoft’s Security Intelligence Report Volume 13 reveals some very interesting figures concerning the currently available versions of Windows 7.

Start64!During the last ten years, Internet Explorer (IE) has completely lost its reputation - mostly thanks to its poor performance, stability issues, security vulnerabilities and a lack of functionality. IE became a joke among PC users. But luckily for its fans, Microsoft hasn't given up hope. In fact, it improved things drastically in the last three versions. However, IE9's performance is still remarkably poor compared to the other web browsers.

Start64!Okay so when it comes to calculation and that too at 64bit datatype calculation, we should always generate x64 architecture binary if your system supports. But before going to the exact experiment, I would  like to introduce to the terms x86 and x64.

Start64!While most x86 hardware shipping in the past few years has been x86_64-capable, Canonical has continued recommending the 32-bit version of Ubuntu Linux over the 64-bit version. With Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" this will hopefully change where the 64-bit version becomes recommended as the default spin. In this article are some updated benchmarks showing the performance of the 32-bit versus 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Start64!Developments in central processing unit architecture have enabled CPU manufacturers to integrate multiple processors, called cores, into a single unit. Computers have been using 32-bit registers for over a decade, but modern CPU cores utilize 64-bit architecture in order to make use of higher RAM capacities. Determining whether to go with a 32-bit or 64-bit multi-core CPU, however, depends on your needs.

Start64!Following our Google Chrome (32 bit vs. 64 bit), Internet Explorer 9 (32 bit vs. 64 bit) and Firefox (32 bit vs. 64 bit) posts, here is another one: a comparison of last week’s Opera 12 Lab builds. Testing notes: both builds have identical build numbers and were tested with default installation settings.

Start64!A: You now have the choice to use the 32-bit or 64-bit version of most Windows OSs today (except for the latest server OS, Windows Server 2008 R2, which is now exclusively 64-bit). The reasons to go 64-bit include greater access to memory for 64-bit applications, access to more than 4GB of physical RAM (although often systems only see around 3GB because other devices use up the memory address space), and improved security capabilities. However, a common question is, does the 64-bit version actually use more memory than the 32-bit counterpart?

Start64!Here are benchmarks of Ubuntu Linux in a virtualized environment using KVM virtualization and testing every release from Ubuntu 11.10 all the way back to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Earlier this month there were benchmarks of Sabayon 7 against Ubuntu 11.10. This came after already having compared Ubuntu 11.04 to Ubuntu 11.10 and also looking at the boot performance and power consumption.

Start64!This document contrasts the 32 and 64 bit install packages available for IBM Cognos 10.1 General availability and the IBM Cognos 10.1.1 Refresh Pack in order to provide high level guidance to able to answer the question: “Should I use the 32 or 64 bit IBM Cognos Business Intelligence (BI) install?”

Start64!Fruity Loops is a popular and flexible program for use in audio editing. It is widely used for creating beats and instrumental tracks for dance and hip-hop music, in part due to the ease of using its sequencer. Fruity Loops is not yet optimized for 64-bit systems. However, you shouldn't encounter problems using it on 64-bit systems.
