New! - WinRAR 64bit version - WinRAR 3.60 has been released recently. On this occasion, we tested the new software in 64-bit terms. The new version is still exclusively built on 32-bit code, therefore its operability on x64 is limited.
In addition to many useful new features, the new version offers improved x64 compatibility. This manifests itself in the fact that the program now integrates into the Windows system flawlessly, without the need of installing a patch. However, the comments on Total Commander also apply to the new WinRAR: the system32 folder remains hidden from the 32-bit program in this case, too, and any operations concerning this folder are automatically redirected to the syswow64 folder. This is easy to try: extract a compressed file with WinRAR to the system32 folder, then look at the system32 folder using a 64-bit file manager . The extracted file is missing from system32 but appears in the syswow64 folder instead. This phenomenon should be taken into account when using the program. A possible solution may be performing operations concerning the system32 folder in a temporary folder first, and then copying the results to their final place with a 64-bit software. Another solution may be using 64-bit archivers:
WinRAR provides native 64-bit support only on command-line level for 64-bit Linux and Windows systems. However, only decompressing is possible in this case:
